National GENIUS Center

Funded by the Institute of Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education, the National GENIUS Center is developing the GENIUS learning environment with GenAgents to engage students in science and engineering practices in middle school classrooms. To be successful in the 21st century, students need to engage in authentic STEM learning supported by cutting-edge AI technology and develop discipline-specific AI literacy. The National GENIUS Center aims to uplift and advance STEM education in the AI era.

GENIUS Center collaborates with:

175
Teachers
15,000
Students
An engaged and supportive learning environment empowered by generative AI!

  • Prepares the next generation of scientists by giving students early experience with AI-enabled methods and tools used in modern research and STEM careers.
  • Strengthens core scientific practices by using AI-driven tools that support modeling, argumentation, data analysis, and experimentation.
  • Supports diverse learners by providing differentiated guidance and identifying learning gaps early.
  • Supports ambitious science teaching by freeing teachers from routine tasks (grading, data capture), so they can focus on supporting students with discourse, modeling, and deeper conceptual understanding.

What makes GENIUS different?

Missions of GENIUS

The GENIUS Center leverages advanced generative AI (GenAI) and large language model (LLM) technologies to transform STEM and computer science (STEM+C) education. The GENIUS Center has four missions:

We Develop

Generative AI-empowered MultiAgent Systems.

We Create

Engaging learning environment to support science and engineering practices.

We Serve

National leadership and outreach on using GenAI to support STEM education.

We Empower

Teachers’ responsible and innovative AI integration.

Through a collaborative, teacher-in-the-loop approach, GENIUS and MultiAgents systems benefit educators and students.

The GENIUS Center utilizes GenAI and large language models to develop multi-agent systems that transform STEM+C education through inclusive and engaging learning environments. Led by collaborators from the University of Georgia, Vanderbilt University, and Educational Testing Service (ETS), GENIUS benefits educators and students across six areas.
